"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit!"
Matthew 28:19 - ESV
Regardless of our specific calling and preparation time, we focus daily on the general Great Commission that our Lord has given to all believers. The commission to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations of the world and make disciples. Fulfilling this Great Commission is the key assignment as believers on this earth. This mission work currently looks like investing ourselves in our neighbors and the city in which we find ourselves. Over time, and in the course of our vision, this should expand beyond that.
"Missions is not an extra-curricular activity of the church that we may or may not get to. Missions is the purpose of the church!" - Dr. Jerry Williamson

In other words: Mission is not an activity in which Christians decide whether they want to get involved or not.
Historically, any church or individual outreach within Jerusalem was considered local evangelism. Any ministry outside Jerusalem that required being sent was considered missionary work. Today, therefore, we also talk about the difference between local evangelism and so-called foreign mission. If there is no distinction between local evangelism and foreign mission, the true meaning and purpose of foreign mission is lost. Not everyone is called to be a cross-cultural missionary. But everyone is called to missions. So much for our understanding.
